Business Coaching Profile: Michael Johnson
By Good Neighbor Pharmacy
“What I enjoy most about business coaching is that no two conversations and no two pharmacies are ever the same. I value the opportunity to help pharmacy owners think strategically, solve problems, and make progress in a way that is meaningful for their business, their team, and the communities they serve.”
- Michael Johnson, Business Coach, Good Neighbor Pharmacy
Johnson began his career with a strong foundation in business. “Coming out of college, I graduated with a bachelor’s of science in business management and marketing,” he said. “So I double majored in both. And my focus was about business management. And my goal was to kind of be able to run my own business.”
That interest in business operations led him into community pharmacy through Walgreens, where he built more than two decades of leadership experience. Over the course of more than 16 years with the organization, Johnson served as a store manager across a wide range of pharmacy settings, including rural and downtown communities. Those experiences gave him firsthand insight into the varying needs of patients, teams, and local markets.
“I spent over 16 years with Walgreens, was a store manager, ran multiple stores, different community backgrounds, some rural, some downtown,” Johnson said. “So, a lot of very different patient demographics that I was exposed to at the time.”
He later advanced to district manager, overseeing pharmacies across Western Arkansas for more than five years. In that role, he sharpened his ability to support multi-site operations, develop talent, and think strategically about performance across locations. That combination of single-store and multi-unit leadership now informs the coaching approach he brings to independent pharmacy owners.
Johnson joined Cencora in 2022 and has spent the past four years as a business coach for Good Neighbor Pharmacy, a national independent pharmacy network offered through Cencora. In this role, he works closely with pharmacy owners to help them navigate the operational, financial, and strategic realities of running a business in a changing healthcare environment.
He says his previous experience helps him relate to the day-to-day pressures owners face. “I utilize my store manager experience to kind of put that hat on with the single-unit pharmacy owners, but then also my district manager experience to kind of support those multi-unit pharmacy owners as well, too,” he said.
For Johnson, business coaching is not about applying a standard playbook. It is about understanding the goals, capabilities, and challenges of each pharmacy and then building a path forward that fits. “Every independent pharmacy is different,” he said. “So there’s no two twins when it comes to independent pharmacy.”
That individualized mindset is one of the reasons Johnson says he enjoys the work so much. He is particularly passionate about helping pharmacy owners and teams grow, not just in terms of financial performance, but also in capability and confidence. “One of the things I really love is talent development,” he said. “That’s always something I like prided myself on through most of my career, helping people get to that next level, not always just like our achieving our business goals, but helping people progress.”
Today, Johnson is part of a broader Good Neighbor Pharmacy coaching team focused on helping independent pharmacies strengthen performance, adapt to industry pressures, and remain vital healthcare destinations in their communities. His work ranges from strategic planning and financial analysis to accountability, growth planning, and operational support.
For pharmacy owners, that means having a trusted partner who understands both the business of pharmacy and the realities of delivering care close to home.
