Business Coaching Profile: John Duffy

By Good Neighbor Pharmacy

John Duffy’s work as a Good Neighbor Pharmacy business coach is grounded in a practical belief: independent pharmacy owners often have opportunities in front of them, but they may need help identifying where to focus and how to act.

With decades of experience in pharmacy operations and business leadership, John has built a reputation for helping independent pharmacy owners move beyond surface-level improvements and uncover the deeper drivers of performance.

“Business coaching isn’t just about improving a business; it’s about helping owners realize there are opportunities right in front of them that they didn’t even realize.”

— John Duffy, Business Coach, Good Neighbor Pharmacy

A business-focused career in pharmacy

Before joining Good Neighbor Pharmacy at Cencora, John spent 24 years with CVS pharmacy, where he built experience across retail pharmacy operations, store leadership and district management. He began as an assistant manager after graduating from Penn State University, then advanced to store manager and district manager.

John is quick to clarify that he is not a pharmacist, but his career has been closely tied to pharmacy through operations, business leadership and performance improvement. That background gives him a business-focused perspective on how pharmacies run, how teams operate and how owners can make decisions that support long-term sustainability.

“My career has always been focused around helping businesses perform better,” John said. “More importantly, helping people understand their business.”

For the past eight years, John has brought that perspective to his role as a business coach with Good Neighbor Pharmacy at Cencora. His work centers on helping independent pharmacy owners step back from the day-to-day demands of the business and identify practical ways to improve performance.

Moving from reacting to leading

Independent pharmacy owners wear multiple hats—balancing patient care, staffing, operations, finances, and community relationships. In that environment, it is easy to fall into a reactive approach. John’s work focuses on helping owners break out of that cycle.

“What I do is I help those pharmacy owners move from reacting to their business to actually leading it,” John said.

That shift is central to John’s coaching philosophy. Rather than treating financials, operations, marketing and patient care as separate parts of the business, John helps owners connect them into one cohesive plan.

He believes clarity is what allows owners to focus on the right priorities and make better decisions. As John puts it, “Business coaching creates clarity, and clarity drives performance.”

Listening first, then acting with purpose

John’s approach starts with listening. He does not force recommendations or assume that every pharmacy needs the same solution. Instead, he asks owners what they want to accomplish, what keeps them up at night and where they want to do more.

From there, John uses the owner’s goals, available financials or pharmacy reports, and his coaching experience to identify the right opportunity for that business. Sometimes that may mean looking at profit per script, cash pricing, vaccines, long-term care or other services that could strengthen performance.

John believes meaningful progress does not always come from one major change. More often, it comes from identifying the right lever and executing consistently.

“Those wins usually don’t always come from one big idea,” John said. “A lot of times, they’re focusing on the right thing.”

Building confidence through clarity

While improved margins and business growth are important outcomes, John sees something equally impactful in the owners he works with: increased confidence.

“I enjoy watching them gain that confidence in their decision-making and seeing that translate into results.”

As owners begin to better understand their business, they become more decisive, more strategic, and more forward-looking. Over time, that confidence compounds—driving stronger performance across the board. For John, this is where the real impact of coaching is felt—not just in the numbers, but in how owners lead their business.

Why business coaching matters now

The independent pharmacy landscape continues to evolve, bringing increasing pressure on margins and greater complexity in operations.

In this environment, working harder is no longer enough.

Success requires clarity, focus, and the ability to make confident, informed decisions.

Through his work with Good Neighbor Pharmacy, John Duffy helps independent pharmacy owners navigate that complexity—connecting insight to action and uncovering opportunities that drive long-term success.
