A history of legislative leadership: Elevate Provider Network's commitment to independent pharmacies
By Good Neighbor Pharmacy
In the past decade, independent pharmacies have faced numerous threats, particularly from DIR fees and unfavorable PBM reimbursement. Kounelis recalls a time when Medicare Part D posed significant challenges: “The dreaded DIR fees and ‘preferred networks’ consumed our contracting strategy and decision-making.” However, Elevate has successfully fought against such practices both at the negotiating table and on the legislative front, ensuring that its members are not only heard but also protected.
Senior Director of Contracting for Elevate Provider Network, Shaun Henry highlights the recent changes in PBM behaviors, noting, “We now have PBMs reevaluating their reimbursement strategies. Elevate’s proactive negotiations with PBMs have resulted in better compensation models, which have been crucial for independent pharmacies’ sustainability.” Elevate’s commitment to its members is evident in its industry-leading strategy for contracting and support at the legislative level.
Tim Jones, Senior Director of Managed Care for Elevate Provider Network, points out that the actions taken by Elevate have set the standard within the industry: “When Elevate made certain unprecedented contracting decisions, it influenced other PSAOs to rethink their strategies.” Elevate’s leadership in this arena has not only benefited its members but has also contributed to a broader movement for reform across the pharmacy landscape.
As Elevate looks forward toward the future, its unparalleled track record of advocacy for fair reimbursement remains a cornerstone of its mission and its value proposition for its member pharmacies. Elevate continues to push for federal and state legislative reforms, ensuring that independent pharmacies are supported in their efforts to serve their communities. Kounelis emphasizes the importance of these efforts: “We must protect and promote independent pharmacy...that’s why Elevate is here.”
