A look ahead for independent pharmacies
By Good Neighbor Pharmacy
Independent pharmacists have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they played a critical role in testing and vaccination efforts. Shaun Henry, Senior Director of Contracting for Elevate Provider Network, reflects on this resilience: “There are independent pharmacies that have thrived by taking care of their patients in innovative ways.” This adaptability is crucial for navigating the complexities of today’s healthcare landscape.
Elevate Provider Network is committed to championing pharmacists, allowing them to practice at the top of their capabilities, fostering innovation, and supporting its members in overcoming obstacles. Through strategic contracting with PBMs and a focus on legislative advocacy, Elevate aims to create more opportunities for independent pharmacies. “What has been accomplished through Elevate’s strategic approach will continue to create more opportunities for our independent pharmacy members to thrive,” Henry emphasizes.
Looking toward 2026, the industry is poised for significant changes, particularly with Medicare Part D reforms. Elevate is proactively preparing its members for these changes, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate new reimbursement models. Tim Jones, Senior Director of Managed Care for Elevate Provider Network noted, “We have fought to negotiate compensation that is closer to the value delivered. Our push for fair compensation is vital for the future sustainability of independent pharmacies.”
Moreover, the growing recognition of the value that independent pharmacies bring to their communities is encouraging. As Kounelis points out, “The American public and state and federal legislators see that medical deserts are increasing.” This awareness reinforces the need for independent pharmacies to remain accessible as a vital resource for healthcare.
Elevate Provider Network believes that, as independent pharmacists continue to adapt and innovate, their commitment to patient care and community well-being will help to ensure their lasting, positive impact on the healthcare landscape.
