Business Coaching Profile: Derek White

By Good Neighbor Pharmacy

Derek White brings two decades of pharmacy expertise to Good Neighbor Pharmacy business coaching

With more than 20 years of pharmacy experience, Derek White understands the industry from the inside out. Over the course of his career, he has worked across independent pharmacy, chain retail, and long-term care. He has built a deep understanding of the operational, clinical, and financial pressures pharmacy owners face every day. As one of the newest business coaches supporting Good Neighbor Pharmacy at Cencora, Derek is bringing that experience directly to independent retail pharmacy owners.

A career shaped by real-world pharmacy experience

Derek’s professional journey began in independent pharmacy, where he spent nine years learning firsthand what it takes to run and grow a community pharmacy. In that setting, he was closely involved in marketing, business growth, and daily operations, while also gaining early exposure to the challenges that continue to shape the industry today.

“There’s always outside pressure, there’s certainly declining reimbursements, but then also trying to balance that with expanding services,” Derek said.

That early experience gave him a practical understanding of how independent pharmacies operate and what owners need to succeed. Then, he spent five years in a high-volume chain retail environment, further expanding his perspective on the realities of pharmacy workflow, staffing, and patient care at scale.

He later transitioned into long-term care pharmacy, where he initially served in a clinical leadership role and helped spearhead medication therapy management and vaccine clinic coordination for facilities. Over time, his responsibilities expanded into operations leadership, where he focused on facility growth and workflow optimization.

“One thing that is constant with pharmacy is that it’s always changing from year to year. The best advice for a pharmacy owner now is to pivot and stay nimble.”

Derek believes that independent pharmacy owners must continuously adapt to shifting reimbursement models, regulatory changes, insurance requirements, rising costs, and evolving patient expectations. From his perspective, success requires more than maintaining the status quo. It requires strategic thinking, operational discipline, and a willingness to evolve. Derek focuses on meeting pharmacy owners where they are. He draws on his own experience to understand their challenges, identify opportunities for improvement and make practical, incremental changes that strengthen performance over time.

Blending analytics, empathy, and strategy

Derek brings a distinctive coaching style to the team. He is analytical and operationally minded, but his approach is grounded in empathy and credibility. Because he has worked in the pharmacy environment himself, he knows the difference between theoretical advice and support that is truly useful.

“I understand what’s on the other side, what some of the things you’re facing, some of the pain points, some of the challenges,” he said.
That lived experience helps him build trust quickly with pharmacy owners. He is working alongside customers to understand how their pharmacies function today and what changes might help them improve workflow, increase efficiency or expand services in a sustainable way.

That philosophy is especially important in today’s pharmacy landscape, where each owner is navigating a different combination of financial pressures, staffing realities, growth goals, and community needs.

Keeping the focus on patient care
“At the end of the day, the end goal is to improve patient outcomes and to help that patient,” Derek said.

That perspective shapes the way he thinks about success. Yes, metrics, analytics, and operational improvements matter. But behind all those numbers is a pharmacy owner working hard to keep the doors open and continue serving the community.

As he begins this next chapter with Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Derek is focused on becoming the kind of trusted partner pharmacy owners can rely on. He believes the best outcomes happen when owners have the right internal team and external support system around them.

“You can’t do it alone,” he said. “You do need that team to really assist you in helping you achieve your goals and thrive.”
